The Liberty Bell is now on display in an exhibition
building near Independence Hall, the red-brick seat of the country’s
first government. It was tolled for the first public reading of the
Declaration of Independence on July 8th, 1776 as well as before any
exceptional events, like the Boston Tea Party.
It is inscribed with the words from the Old Testament :
'Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants
thereof'.
The Bell has come to symbolize as well patriotism as freedom and
independence. |
